Every island is very different, but the basic Hawaii packing list will be sufficient for each island. For my trip the destination is Kauai (11 days) and Oahu, HI (1 day).

Weather: Kauai is warm all year around. For the month of June the average high temperature is 83° F. The average low temperature is 73° F. Kauai is a lush island which means one thing…rain. The rain showers on Kauai are usually brief and happen overnight. The monthly rainfall average in inches for June is around 1.75 inches. Rain makes the waterfalls flow, and the rainbows appear. 🙂

Length of Stay

This trip to Kauai and Oahu will be for 12 glorious nights.

Our activities will include:

We will be staying in the Kapaa Sands Condos for the duration of our stay. There are laundry facilities on site so that does effect my packing essentials. I found our accommodations through Airbnb. These condos are located on the east side. Our condo is an ocean front view. Check it out here!

What to Pack?

When I pack for vacation I always make sure that my clothes are in similar color families so that I can mix and match my outfits. There are many different outfits that you can get from denim shorts, tank tops, and tee shirts.

That is one of the GREAT things about Kauai, how laid back the atmosphere is. I am taking one summer dress for the luau, but all of my other outfits are casual and can be dressed up with a chambray top.

Here are my very favorite travel items that I have purchased. I know that you will find them useful too!

Don’t forget to download my carry-on packing checklist!

Carryon Checklist

packing for hawaii

  • 2 pairs of denim shorts

  • 1 pair of white shorts/khaki shorts

  • 2 pairs of active shorts

  • rashguard top

  • 3 bathing suits

  • long pants (for flight and helicopter ride)

  • 4 cotton tank tops

  • 3-4 active (dri-fit) tank tops

  • 3 tee shirts

  • 2-3 v-neck tees

  • white flowy shirt

  • 3/4 length shirt or hoodie

  • chambray button up

  • 1-2 summer dresses

Most restaurants do not require fancy clothes for their dress code. Check the restaurant’s website before packing to see any clothing guidelines.

shoes for hawaii

  • 2 pairs of flip flops

  • 1 pair of tennis shoes

  • 1 pair of water shoes

Flip flops or “slippahs” are a necessity in Hawaii. Yellowbox flip flops are SUPER comfortable so I am bringing two pairs. Tennis shoes will be for the helicopter ride, some trails, and cycling the east coast. The Dr. Scholl’s river shoes are perfect for the times when your feet will get wet.

simple jewelry for Hawaii

  • beaded bracelets

  • gold knot earrings

  • simple statement necklace (for summer dresses)

  • underwater watch

Very little jewelry is required in Hawaii. It’s never a great idea to take your expensive jewelry on vacation. Take versatile but simple pieces.

makeup for two weeks in hawaii

  • BB cream with SPF

  • moisturizer

  • face scrub

  • blush

  • face powder

  • waterproof mascara

  • bar soap (Dr. Bonner’s Peppermint Castile Soap)

  • deodorant

  • tooth paste/toothbrush

  • hairbrush -Wet Brush

  • wavy hairspray

  • lip balm with SPF

  • ponytail holders

  • aloe vera wipes

Another great aspect of Hawaii is that you don’t have to wear a lot of makeup. With that perfect vacation tan, your skin doesn’t need much help. 🙂 Using products with SPF in them is always a good idea. Try taking products that serve more than one purpose.

medicine for Hawaii trip

  • acid reducer

  • Tums

  • Ibuprofen

  • Band-aids

  • antibiotic Ointment

  • Pepto Tablets

  • headache medicine with caffeine

Taking various medicines and a small first-aid kit is a good idea when traveling. When eating new types of food, Tums, acid reducer, and Pepto are great medicines to pack!

  • 10 pairs of unmentionables

  • strapless bra with straps

  • 3 sports bras

  • bandeaux bra

  • 6 pairs of socks

  • white undershirt

  • black undershirt

If you have access to a laundry facility or can wash some of these in a sink then you don’t have to pack every pair of socks that you own. The good thing is that these items don’t take up much space inside a carry-on.

  • light rain jacket

  • ball cap

  • adventure hat with chin strap

It’s smart to carry a light jacket for higher altitudes, helicopter rides, and visits to canyons/volcanoes. I love ball caps, but I also like to include a hat with a chin strap so that it doesn’t blow off of my head. 🙂 It is ideal for sun protection on your neck and ears.

extra items for hawaii

  • backpack for hikes

  • plastic baggies

  • reusable grocery bag

  • travel purse

  • travel sized umbrella

  • waterproof underwater belted pouch for snorkeling

Waterproof pouches are perfect for carrying credit cards, driver’s license, and keys inside while you snorkel. This bag has also been tested to carry iPhones with no leaks! Plastic baggies are great for everything when traveling.

Also, make sure that you grab a reusable grocery bag for your trip. Kauai doesn’t use plastic bags at the grocery stores. You can also purchase one when you arrive if you don’t want to take one with you. 🙂 Don’t forget to check out some of my other necessary travel items here!

  • small binoculars

  • camera

  • 2-3 SD cards

  • extra chargeable batteries

  • Gopro and attachments

  • 2-3 paperback books to take to the beach

  • Kauai Guidebook

You don’t want to get caught in the middle of the perfect travel seflie and find out that you are out of camera storage or out of batteries. Make sure that you take extra SD cards and plenty of rechargeable batteries! A good guide book is always a good idea for any destination. Guide books give detailed maps, tips, reviews, and insider hacks to local spots.

Airport Outfit:

  • cargo pants

  • tennis shoes

  • white v-neck tee

  • chambray shirt

  • ball cap

Depending on where you live, a flight to Hawaii can take a LONG time. Our flight time will be about 9.5 hours. Long flight=comfortable clothes. I like wearing layers of clothes that are comfortable.

Inside Personal Item (backpack)

  • inflatable neck roll

  • refillable Water bottle filled with water

  • almonds in baggie

  • cutie oranges

  • grapes in baggie

  • Germ-x (3 oz)

  • antibacterial wipes

  • SunJack 8000mAh QC2.0 Quick Charge Battery

  • acid reducer

  • Tums

  • headache medicine

  • travel Brush

  • Chapstick

  • handlotion

  • earbuds

  • earplugs

  • word Search

  • Nook

  • small blanket

  • pen

  • all conformation papers in folder

  • eye mask

  • Kauai Guidebook

  • Gopro and attachments

  • camera

  • gum

Keeping yourself entertained for long periods of time on a flight can be a daunting task. Make sure that you take plenty of reading material, word searches, and downloaded TV shows to keep you busy. I like taking my Nook and loading it up with books.

Traveling with a refillable water bottle (fill up after security check) is a necessity. The cups of water that they give you during flights are teeny tiny. I drink a lot of water!

  1. First off, I’m so jealous!!! If I were to fly from where I live, it’d take about 8 and a half hours!!! I’m looking forward to seeing details and photos from your trip! Safe travels!!!

    1. The flights are so long!!! Just be thinking of me because I’ve never been up in an airplane for longer than 4 hours!!

    1. Thank you so much!! I will write a DETAILED post when I get back so you will have all the juicy details about Kauai. You have to let me know if you decide to go!!! 🙂

    1. Oh wow that is great! If you decide to go and need more advice on what to do and where to stay then please don’t hesitate to email me! 🙂

  2. First of all, I am SO JEALOUS! I love Hawaii and your packing lists are great but hey, just go. All you really need are a swimsuit, dress to throw on top and your phone. If you forget your toothbrush, buy one though ok, ha ha. I once completed a hike up a volcanic trail in bare feet when my sandal broke and it was more difficult to clunk along in it than to just take them off and go. Should have seen the stares and people commenting how the heck I was walking bare feet. I just said ‘Us Canadians are tough, haven’t you ever heard of billy goats.” Oh man, maybe a good idea to be prepared and pack the right stuff for your trip!

  3. I wanna go to a luau in Hawaii! This sounds like such a fun trip and great advice on the best way to prepare!

    1. I’ll let you know how the Dole Whip is! It is one of my favorite treats from our state fair every year. Can’t wait to taste the original. 🙂

  4. Awesome list! I am a chronic over packer, and I always have been! I will definitely be copy catting some of your tips, although I wish I was on my way on vacation as well!

  5. So jealous! I’d love to go to Hawaii for two weeks! I went there twice while younger and it’s on my bucket list to take my hubs and daughter eventually. Great packing list!

  6. I really want to go to Hawaii! It looks like you’re prepped and ready to have a fantastic time there!… Unfortunately all these tips wont really work for me but If I ever go there it’s definitely going to have to be for more than a month with a huge bag!

Tell me what you think
