Shop Out of Season

trendy clothes shopping out of season

Shopping out of season can save a bundle of money. It takes a little planning, but if you can stick to it then you can get new clothing for a couple of bucks.

It’s not always easy to think of what you may need a year from now. If you already know where you will be vacationing the next year then it is easier. At the end of last summer I knew that we would be traveling to Kauai the following summer. I was able to plan ahead and get tank tops, shorts, and bathing suits on serious mark down.

Secondhand Shopping

I may lose some people here. I LOVE shopping at secondhand stores. Some of my favorite pieces of  trendy clothing were purchased at Goodwill or at yard sales. I have learned that I have to be in the mood to search through used clothes. Here are some tips for shopping secondhand:

  • know the layout of the store

  • find out how the store organizes their clothes

  • don’t look through every rack; know which colors look best on you, avoid the others

  • bring hand sanitizer

  • carry a small cross-body purse

  • bring cash just in case

  • be on the look out for high-quality brands

  • inspect clothes for holes, missing buttons, stains, and shrinkage

Walmart

Have you seen the clothing at Walmart recently? It is super affordable and trendy. Walmart is one of my favorite stores to shop out-of-season because of the extremely low clearance prices.

If you haven’t heard of the Woah Wait Walmart duo then check out their Instagram account. They are always updating their IG with trendy finds at Walmart. Now they have their own clothing line that is affordable and adorable.

Sister Swap

Do you have friends, sisters, or moms that have a trendy taste in clothing? If your sizes match then I recommend having a “sister swap”. Take turns cleaning out your closets and swapping clothes. This is completely free and can refresh your closet with new pieces!

Utilize Clearance Sales

Clearance sales can save you so much money if you don’t go crazy buying items that you didn’t really need. I’m a firm believer in making shopping lists everywhere I go. That decreases the chances that I will purchase items that I don’t need. Are you looking for the perfect white tee or a trendy cargo vest? Write it down. 🙂

Here are a few stores that I love to shop for clearance sales:

  • Altar’d State

  • Belk

  • Levi Store

  • Old Navy

  • Rue21

  • Walmart

Don’t forget to search online and in-store clearance sales!

Outlet Mall Sales

If you have an outlet mall near you then I suggest shopping the outlet mall sales after Christmas and after Labor Day. These two times of the year have the largest sales and most markdowns. Certain stores have better sales than others. My favorite outlet mall stores to shop are:

  • G.H. Bass & Co.

  • Levi

  • Old Navy

  • Vanity Fair

Sign-Up for Coupons

Stores have finally gotten the memo that customers LOVE saving money and using coupons. Most stores have a text opt-in offer to send coupons via text message. Always check near the check-out counters for these offers. If you don’t see one then ask the cashier.

You can also sign-up to receive coupon offers via email. Visit your favorite stores’ websites to check for this option.

Follow on Social Media

Stores often post special savings and discount offers on their social media outlets. Be sure that you follow your favorite stores, local and national. Facebook and Twitter feeds are updated more often than others.

Use Shopping Apps

There are numerous shopping apps that show all of the sales going on at your favorite stores. Some of those apps even offer special offers/coupons. My favorite shopping apps to use are:

  • Checkout 51-great resource for receiving coupons and special offers for your favorite items. It’s free to sign-up!

  1. Great tips to save me and find good deals! I just never have luck at thrift stores, perhaps if I follow your guidelines here I will find some great items. I wasn’t aware that stores shared coupons or deals on the instagram accounts, I will have to check that out. Once again, super post Lacee!

    1. Thanks a ton Lisa!! My mom used to say the same thing about not having much luck at thrift stores. She went with me a couple times and now she is like a pro! 🙂 Thanks for always having such kind feedback. 🙂

  2. I love that list of shopping apps! I knew about RetailMeNot, but I will definitely have to start using the others! Thanks for sharing!

  3. I love second hand shopping, I don’t know why more people don’t! Although that does mean that there are more great finds for me to get my hands on!! Great tips by the way, I love a good bargain!

  4. I love shopping at thrift stores! I don’t always have the best luck but there’s been times i walk out with 5 huge bags of clothes for $50. You can’t get that anywhere else. Thanks for your awesome tips. 🙂

  5. YES! To all of this! I love the clearance rack and I totally can find super cute stuff at Target! Pinned for later!

  6. Thrift store shopping and Walmart are some of my go-to shopping spots! Great advice, especially the sister swap.

    1. I have heard of Papaya but haven’t tried them out. I’ll definitely look into them! Yes, I love Old Navy!

  7. Personally I am not really in to second hand shopping however I know that my sister loves it and finds some great little things! Also, I wish we had Walmart here! I went there when I lived in the US and it was amazing!

    1. The quality has completely done a 180 over the last few years. Some of my favorite tops come from Walmart now. So quality is good! 🙂

  8. My favorite money saving tips for clothing is to purchase good quality clothes. Often I’m tempted to go for cheap clothes as it doesn’t cost much up front, but half the time, it’s not great quality wise and I end up having to replace the clothes six months later. Thrift stores are a great idea. Research good clothing brands and keep an eye out for those clothes at thrift stores.

  9. I am definitely an out of season shopper, especially for my kids, but I just can’t get the hang of the second-hand stores. I feel like I always leave frustrated. You are probably right about having to be in the mood, so I’ll have to try the rest of your tips next time!

  10. Great post! I have another shopping app I love that’s not listed on here: ShopStyle. It allows you to keep track of items you’re interested in and notifies you of any sale of that item as it checks various stores for you.

  11. Love this post! I definitely second your point about thrift shopping – and to add to that, I recommend checking out the Poshmark app! It’s like ebay but exclusively for fashion (and a lot more user-friendly in my opinion!) I’ve scored some amazing deals on it. I had never heard of the whowaitwalmart account but now I can’t wait to check them out! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
