Should You Monetize Your Blog? YES!

To Monetize or Not to Monetize

Affiliate Marketing

What is affiliate marketing? Affiliate marketing is based on arrangements between you and an online retailer. The retailer pays commission to an external website for sales that happen due to referrals. Affiliate programs offer unique links to use so that any commission or referral credit goes straight to your account. How easy is that?

Where Do You Start?

monetizing your blog

How do you decide which affiliate programs to monetize your blog? It is essential to choose affiliate programs that fit with your niche. Since my blog focuses on lifestyle, travel, budget, and blogging resources I chose:

(see a more detailed list below)

These banners and links fit nicely into my content, and they don’t distract my readers. It is important to keep your links, ads, and banners simple and clean. If there are too many banners that distract from your content then you may lose some of your audience.

It’s important to give details about why you support and promote a company. In my Planning a Vacation on a Budget post, I explain what my favorite companies are to use when planning a trip. I included details of how I utilize TripAdvisor when planning trips. I also listed my favorite airfare websites like Cheapflights.com and Airfare Watchdog.

Most of my readers are wanting budget tips, travel advice, or blogging advice. Make sure that you are meeting a need or answering a question with the resources and companies that you promote.

Promote Your Hosting Service

To have a successful blog that is monetized you need to sign up with a hosting service. HostGator is the hosting service that I use, and it is awesome! I love their customer service and the resources that they offer for a low price. I had my blog up and running with WordPress within 10 minutes of signing up through HostGator.

Once you sign up with HostGator, you are able to refer others for their services through CJ Affiliate. It’s definitely a win-win situation!

Affiliate Programs

Knowing which affiliate programs to sign up for can be the difference between making a passive income or filling your blog with ads without purpose. Choose affiliates that your audience can identify with and will appreciate having more information about.

Yes, affiliate programs are great for making money, but the main reason to sign-up with programs is because you believe in the product or services that they offer. Here is a more detailed list of my favorite affiliate programs. Make sure to check back regularly because I will be adding to this list as I discover new programs that I love!

  • Airbnb-I love using Airbnb for travel purposes.Your readers will get $40 travel credit. When they book their first trip, you will get $20 worth of travel credit.

  • AWIN-Sign up for their many affiliate programs. Swagbucks is a great program to sign-up for through AWIN. Take surveys, refer others, make money. Simple! Fiverr-Browse the range of services offered by their global community of talented freelancers.Choose the perfect service for your needs. Specify the details to get your order started. They also offer a $5 referral program.

  • CJ AffiliateHostGator, Lonely Planet, and LifeisGood are all programs that CJ Affiliate offer partnerships with.

  • Ebates-Ebates is great for online shoppers. They also offer a referral program that gives you $50 for referring others.

  • Flexoffers-They offer 10, 431 advertisers to work with. They also have a great referral program! LendEDU, Lending Tree, and Airfare Watchdog

  • Ibotta-This is a great resource for grocery shopping! You receive $5 when you refer a friend. Your friend receives $10. How great is that?

  • Ultimate Bundles-This program offers great bundles for all niches. If you sell 5 bundles then you receive the bundle for free. You can’t beat that!

  • Viglink-This is super easy to insert onto your website. They turn product links into affiliate profit (if they have a relationship with the company). If you refer a new user to VigLink they pay you 35% of the commission for the first year!

  • Walmart Affiliate Program-I love shopping at Walmart so this was a no-brainer for me. Their products are high-quality for a low price. Sign up today!

Reviewing Products

versatility of backpack

One of the easiest ways to monetize your blog is to review high-quality products that your readers will love. In my post, The Ultimate Travel Companion, I talk about what makes the Ozark Trail Backpack the best pack for adventurers, travelers, and organizers. I purchased the product because it is high-quality at low-cost. That is what I love sharing with my audience.

It’s also important to include pictures of you using the product that you are reviewing. It shows the genuineness of your post and helps your readers trust your judgement, which is essential.

Don’t Forget

Just remember that you didn’t start blogging just so you could make money. You became a blogger because you are passionate about something and want to share your information with the world. Being able to monetize your blog is just a perk of a great passion. Making money doing something that you love is one of the most rewarding things in the world.

Don’t Compare

Don't compare yourself to others.

This is a big one. Don’t compare yourself to other bloggers. With the new world of blogger income reports being posted it’s easy to get caught up in others’ success. Run the race that is before YOU. We each have our own goals and our own passions. Let’s celebrate one another but not compare ourselves to each other. We are all in this together! 🙂

  1. I loved this post. I been struggling with the decision to promote companies on my blog. I started blogging because I love to write and didn’t want to take away from that. 2. I was thinking of trying to monetize my blog! But I feel like it’s pretty early. And I don’t want to seem spammy with affiliate links. What do you think ?

    1. I think if the links are tastefully added then you can start from day one with affiliate links. When I read blogs with affiliate links they don’t seem spammy at all to me. Good luck, and let me know if you need help getting it started when you decide to. 🙂

  3. Thanks SO much for this! I intend to monetize my blog and only have Amazon affiliate account for now (that I might drop because I’ve heard mixed things about going that route…)

I’m currently looking into potential affiliates, and a few of these are going on my list. 🙂

    1. I started my blog with three posts. Once I shared my posts I started building more on them each week. I also went back and added affiliate links to them. 🙂

  5. Been on the fence about monetizing my blog. Mostly to make money to support the cause. Thanks for the post!

  6. Great tips and ideas. Especially love the ending that reminds us to not compare ourselves to others but rather to remember we all have a unique plan and goals to work towards.

    1. Thanks Lisa! Yes the comparison game can be a tough one. We just have to keep encouraging one another. 🙂

  8. Wow! There’s so much information in this post that I find really helpful. I’m currently working on posting regularly in my blog, and then my next step will be monetizing it! I’m always worried that I might have a hard time because I don’t really have a niche that I write about, though.

  12. It’s so true that it is important to stay to to yourself and your brand even while trying to make money. Don’t affiliate yourself with brands that don’t represent your image well.

  13. I think that you might as well monetize your blog. It makes sense and if the affiliates are linked to your topics then the readers will appreciate the links/recommendations too.
