What is affiliate marketing? Affiliate marketing is based on arrangements between you and an online retailer. The retailer pays commission to an external website for sales that happen due to referrals. Affiliate programs offer unique links to use so that any commission or referral credit goes straight to your account. How easy is that?
Where Do You Start?
How do you decide which affiliate programs to monetize your blog? It is essential to choose affiliate programs that fit with your niche. Since my blog focuses on lifestyle, travel, budget, and blogging resources I chose:
Checkout 51 and Coupon Surfer for grocery coupons. I gave details about these resources in detailed posts:Cut Your Grocery Budget in Half and 2 Week Grocery Budget $150
HostGator, as my host site and gave a tutorial of how to start a WordPress blog
Lendedu, Lending Tree, Paribus, Sofie are perfect for the budget savvy and financial advisers
Airbnb, CityPass, Tours4Fun, and TripAdvisor for travel help and are explained in Planning a Vacation on a Budget and Planning a Weekend Getaway
Ultimate Bundles for blogger resources, lifestyle hacks, e-books, webinars, and a lot more. I did a Facebook Live video explaining these resources as well.
(see a more detailed list below)
These banners and links fit nicely into my content, and they don’t distract my readers. It is important to keep your links, ads, and banners simple and clean. If there are too many banners that distract from your content then you may lose some of your audience.
It’s important to give details about why you support and promote a company. In my Planning a Vacation on a Budget post, I explain what my favorite companies are to use when planning a trip. I included details of how I utilize TripAdvisor when planning trips. I also listed my favorite airfare websites like Cheapflights.com and Airfare Watchdog.
Most of my readers are wanting budget tips, travel advice, or blogging advice. Make sure that you are meeting a need or answering a question with the resources and companies that you promote.
Promote Your Hosting Service
To have a successful blog that is monetized you need to sign up with a hosting service. HostGator is the hosting service that I use, and it is awesome! I love their customer service and the resources that they offer for a low price. I had my blog up and running with WordPress within 10 minutes of signing up through HostGator.
Once you sign up with HostGator, you are able to refer others for their services through CJ Affiliate. It’s definitely a win-win situation!
Knowing which affiliate programs to sign up for can be the difference between making a passive income or filling your blog with ads without purpose. Choose affiliates that your audience can identify with and will appreciate having more information about.
Yes, affiliate programs are great for making money, but the main reason to sign-up with programs is because you believe in the product or services that they offer. Here is a more detailed list of my favorite affiliate programs. Make sure to check back regularly because I will be adding to this list as I discover new programs that I love!
Airbnb-I love using Airbnb for travel purposes.Your readers will get $40 travel credit. When they book their first trip, you will get $20 worth of travel credit.

Fiverr-Browse the range of services offered by their global community of talented freelancers.Choose the perfect service for your needs. Specify the details to get your order started. They also offer a $5 referral program.

Ibotta-This is a great resource for grocery shopping! You receive $5 when you refer a friend. Your friend receives $10. How great is that?
Infolinks-Super easy to install, and they offer a referral program as well.

Shareasale-Shareasale offers thousands of merchants to work with. If you are a lifestyle/travel blogger then here are some of the merchants you can partner with: Checkout 51 and Coupon Surfer for all of you budget-minded folks. CityPass and Tours4Fun for you lovers of travel.

Viglink-This is super easy to insert onto your website. They turn product links into affiliate profit (if they have a relationship with the company). If you refer a new user to VigLink they pay you 35% of the commission for the first year!
Walmart Affiliate Program-I love shopping at Walmart so this was a no-brainer for me. Their products are high-quality for a low price. Sign up today!
One of the easiest ways to monetize your blog is to review high-quality products that your readers will love. In my post, The Ultimate Travel Companion, I talk about what makes the Ozark Trail Backpack the best pack for adventurers, travelers, and organizers. I purchased the product because it is high-quality at low-cost. That is what I love sharing with my audience.
It’s also important to include pictures of you using the product that you are reviewing. It shows the genuineness of your post and helps your readers trust your judgement, which is essential.
Just remember that you didn’t start blogging just so you could make money. You became a blogger because you are passionate about something and want to share your information with the world. Being able to monetize your blog is just a perk of a great passion. Making money doing something that you love is one of the most rewarding things in the world.
This is a big one. Don’t compare yourself to other bloggers. With the new world of blogger income reports being posted it’s easy to get caught up in others’ success. Run the race that is before YOU. We each have our own goals and our own passions. Let’s celebrate one another but not compare ourselves to each other. We are all in this together! 🙂
